According to police, a dozen people were killed during a shooting in an education center in the center of Sweden, including the alleged shooter.

The shooting of the Risbergska school in Orebro, 200 km (124 miles) west of the capital Stockholm, took place on Tuesday afternoon.

Police said they thought the male attacker was among the dead and that he was not known before. There was no immediately identifiable reason and he was supposed to act alone, they said.

They warned Tuesday evening that the number of deaths could continue to increase while several people had been injured.

“This is an extremely tragic incident,” said Orebro police chief Roberto Eid Forest.

Earlier, the Swedish Prime Minister said it was “a very painful day for everyone in Sweden”.

A number of injured have been transported to hospital, with at least four people undergoing operations.

Police first declared that five people had been killed and that they were investigated such as murder, criminal fire and an offense of aggravated weapons.

Later, local media began to point out that several people had died before the police said that “about 10” people had been killed, but “they could not be more specific” on the number of deaths.

They also confirmed that there did not seem to be any reason for “terror” behind the attack.

Police have heard information reporting a shooting that takes place at Risbergska school – an adult education center – at 12:33 local time (11:44 GMT). The installation is located on a campus that houses other schools.

These centers are frequented mainly by people who have not finished primary or secondary school.

Earlier, students from several neighboring schools were kept inside “for safety purposes”.

“We don’t want public members to have it,” said the police chief.

Nearby hospitals had cleaned their emergency rooms and intensive care units to free up space for patients, local media reported.

Orebro University Hospital said five people injured by ball injury had been treated in the emergency room. A sixth additional person, not injured by a firearm, had “minor injuries” treated, he said.

No child was one of the people dealt with there, said the Municipality of the County of Orebro in an update.

Professor Lena Warenmark told SVT, Swedish public radio, she heard about 10 shots near her study.

Prime Minister ULF KrisSSON said that today was “a very painful day for everyone in Sweden” because he shared that those who had a “normal school day” replaced “by terror” are all in his thoughts.

“Being confined to a classroom with fear for your own life is a nightmare that no one should have to live,” said Kristersson in an article on X.

“The government is in close contact with the police authority and closely monitored developments.”

His Minister of Justice, Gunnar Strommer, echoes these remarks, saying that the local SVT diffuser “the news of an attack in Orebro is very serious”.
