In the episode “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” “The Magnificent Ferengi” (December 29, 1997), Quark (Armin Shimerman), One of the best characters in the franchiseLearn that his mother Ishka (Cecily Adams) was captured by the wicked Dominion. At the beginning, Quark wants to constitute a team of commandos of Crack Ferengi, composed of his brother Rom (Max Grodenchik), his nephew Nog (Aron Eisenberg), his Gila cousin (Josh Pais), and a fighter named Lek (Hamilton Camp) to withdraw, but will soon understand that his “Squad Crack” Kind of Subks. Instead, he organized a meeting at an abandoned Cardassian space station called Empok nor where he, with a prisoner from Vorta, will negotiate an exchange of prisoners, using his acute sense of the conclusion of transactions.
On Empok Nor, Quark meets a vorta general named Yelgrun, a smooth flipper with the intention of listening to the terms of Quark for the exchange. Yelgrun, perhaps surprisingly, is played by Iggy Pop, the famous punk rocker and leader for the Stooges. Pop had, of course, already accumulated an impressive actor’s summary before “Star Trek”, but it is surprising that he agrees to play a role in such a manual franchise. Before “Deep Space Nine”, “Pop had played Randy Belvedere Ricketts in” Cry-Baby “by John Waters, a criminal named Rat against” Tank Girl “, and a Western criminal in a” Dead Man “dress by Jim Jarmusch. He was also in five episodes of” The Adventures of Pete and Pete ” “The Crow: City of Angels”.
But it was weird (and exhilarating) to see the Pop Sentorian Pop icon in the ears of Vorta disproportionate to speak to a pile of Ferengi on “Deep Space Nine”. He instantly joined a new pantheon of stars of Star Trek guests.
Iggy Pop played a vorta named Yelgrun on Deep Space Nine
Ferengi are generally treated as comic relief characters on “Deep Space Nine”. They are clever, intelligent and unscrupulous, but also presented as non -threatening and sometimes clumsy. Pop, in a way a figure of disproportionate rock, is perfectly equaled to Ferengi, capable of bringing a flashing energy to his character. The vorta is generally considered to be eager for power and willing to murder who they need to win a fight, but they also appear to be selfish, perhaps too assured for their own good. Iggy Pop understood it about his character and played the role of the maximum of his capacities.
Pop appeared on “Deep Space Nine” because the showrunner, Ira Steven Behr, was a huge fan. He had been then pop for years to play a role on “Star Trek” and, according to Terry J. Erdmann and Paula M. Block “The Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Companion,” Even wrote a role specifically for him in the episode “Past tense, Part II”. Pop had to play a 21st century vagabond named Grady. However, he could not assume the role, because he was busy tours in Spain.
Three years later, something very unlucky happened for pop which was in fact very good luck for Behr. The singer underwent a minor shoulder injury in a Mosh Pit accident and had to take a little time on tour to recover. During the recovery period, pop was mobile enough to act, and Behr placed it in “Deep Space Nine” when he could still. “For Iggy,” said Behr, cited, “I would not be refused.” Pop was also attached to this role! He had no just cameo, but played a major role throughout the second half of his episode.
Behr had concerns about Iggy Pop
“The magnificent Ferengi” (Once declared the best episode of Ferengi of “DS9” by / film) was co-written by Behr and the longtime staff member of “Deep Space Nine” Hans Beimler, and Beimler remembers how Behr was stoked to guarantee pop services:
“Ira was delighted! To cry out loud, Iggy Pop has been one of his heroes for years. I have heard of Iggy Pop since I have known him. I saw Iggy Pop posters at home. What can I say? Man was in paradise.”
Behr, however, admitted a skosh of worry when it comes to launching Iggy Pop as a vorta. He feared that pop, normally a very great performer, be motionless and retained. He also knew that he was only doing on the set because of an injury and was sensitive to the physical difficulties he could have crossed. Behr said:
“I knew that the role was going to be difficult for Iggy, because he is a very kinetic interpreter. […] His physique is certainly part of whom he is, and unfortunately, we threw him like a vorta, one of the most motionless characters. […] You could see that he was clearly uncomfortable during all hours he had to be there on the set, but he never complained. […] [But he] really obtained this quality denies that the vorta has, like Weyoun; Think of Caligula! It was just a delight. “”
Weyoun is the character of Vorta Central on “Deep Space Nine”, and is played by the versatile Jeffrey Combs, and it is not a small compliment to compare to Jeffrey Combs. Not besides, Combres also appeared in “The Magnifice Ferengi”, playing a character of Ferengi named Brunt. Maybe Pop has received some advice from his co-star.
