Lyon appoint former AC Milan boss Fonseca

Lyon made the former AC Milan manager Paulo Fonseca, their new head coach just a month after leaving the San Siro.

Fonseca, 51, signed a two and a half year contract with the Ligue 1 club and replaces Pierre Sage.

Lyon sage wise earlier this week, but entered the last 16 of the Europa League after a 1-1 draw with Ludogorets in their last group group match on Thursday.

The club is sixth at the top of the French route after having succeeded in a single victory in its last five championship games and was eliminated from the French Cup after a defeat of the fifth French club Bourgoin-Jallieu.

“Olympique Lyonnais is very pleased to announce the appointment of Paulo Fonseca as the professional team of the professional team until June 30, 2027,” Lyon said in a statement.

“This choice, taken unanimously by John Textor and the whole of sports management, is part of the desire to give Olympique Lyonnais a strong ambition, both on the national and European scene.”

Fonseca was dismissed by Milan after only six months of work. He previously directed Lille to Ligue 1, guiding them in fourth place last season.

He won the Portuguese Super Cup with Porto in 2013, the Portugal Cup with Braga in 2015-2016, as well as the Ukrainian Premier League with Shakhtar three times in a row.

His first game in charge of Lyon will be their trip to Marseille on Sunday.
