The Champions League is Europe’s largest club cup competition bringing together the best teams from the continent’s best leagues. The likes of fifteen-time European champions Real Madrid, seven-time winners AC Milan, and six-time winners Liverpool and Bayern Munich are all looking to add to their tally this season.
In the current state of affairs
Liverpool top the standings of the 36-team Champions League, with six wins in six games so far and two more to play. Arne Slot’s Liverpool side have so far beaten teams like AC Milan, Bologna, RB Leipzig, Bayer Leverkusen, Real Madrid and Girona. The Reds must still host LOSC Lille at Anfield and travel to Eindhoven to face PSV.
Current champions, Real Madrid occupy 20th position in the new Champions League rankings, just five positions away from being completely eliminated from the competition! Madrid have struggled this year, winning only three of the six matches played in the UCL this season and losing the other three.
Madrid must finish in the top 24 to secure a playoff spot or in the top eight to automatically qualify for the round of 16. Real Madrid are currently 4 points from 8th in the championship, so it is not impossible for them to still qualify automatically. However, they need a clean finish in the league stage. Ancelotti will look to avoid a playoff spot as it means two extra games added to Madrid’s busy schedule. These two matches will be played on February 11, 12, 18 and 19, 2025.
Another big name that seems more likely to miss out on a knockout spot or even a playoff spot is French champions PSG. The Parisians currently occupy 25th place in the championship. However, they are just one point behind Dinamo Zagreb, who will next face Arsenal. While PSG also faces a tough test against Man City.
