I just read a great book for patients on spinal stenosis rehabilitation, by physical therapist Terri Night: “Reduce Your Own Spinal Stenosis: Strategies to Improve Your Spine Health.” First of all, this is very encouraging because many older people have spinal stenosis and have no symptoms. She points out that various factors such as inflammation and hydration status, over which we have considerable control, play a major role in the severity of symptoms. Over the years, she has worked with many patients who did I have severe symptoms, often worse than my own, and they have improved significantly thanks to the strategies described in the book, including aerobic exercises, stretching the spine and hips, strengthening the muscles around of the spine and lifestyle changes. There is a final discussion about surgical options in case symptoms persist or you experience more serious symptoms like numbness or loss of bladder control.
I got some really good ideas from it on how to modify activities to avoid causing flare-ups in my lumbar spine, as well as new exercises to try. I highly recommend this book to anyone suffering from spinal stenosis.
