The main EU countries have said that they support a plan supported by Arabic for the reconstruction of Gaza which would cost $ 53 billion (41 billion pounds sterling) and would avoid moving the Palestinians from the territory.
The plan, developed by Egypt and approved by Arab leaders, was rejected by Israel and the American president Donald Trumpwho presented his own vision to transform the Gaza Strip into “Riviera du Middle East”.
On Saturday, the foreign ministers of France, Germany, Italy and Great Britain welcomed the plan, which calls on Gaza to rebuild for five years, as “realistic”.
In a statement, they said that the proposal had promised “a rapid and lasting improvement in catastrophic living conditions” for the inhabitants of Gaza.
The plan provides that Gaza is temporarily governed by a committee of independent experts and that international peacekeepers be deployed in the territory.
The committee would be responsible for supervising humanitarian aid and temporarily managing Gaza’s affairs under the supervision of the Palestinian authority.
The proposal is an alternative to Trump’s idea for the United States to resume Gaza and reinstall its population.
It was welcomed by the Palestinian authority and Hamas After being presented Tuesday by Egypt at a summit of the Arab Emergency League.
But the White House and the Israeli Foreign Affairs said that he had not responded to realities in Gaza.
“Residents cannot live humanly in a territory covered with debris and unplodced ammunition,” Trump’s National Security Council spokesman said Brian Hughes on Tuesday.
“President Trump respects his vision of rebuilding Gaza Libre du Hamas,” added the press release.
The press release published by the four European countries said on Saturday that they were “determined to work with the Arab initiative” and that they appreciated the “important signal” that the Arab states had sent by developing it.
The press release indicates that Hamas “should neither govern Gaza nor be a threat to Israel” and that the four countries “support the central role of the Palestinian Authority and the implementation of its reform program”.
The proposal was written in the midst of the growing concern that Gaza’s fragile ceasefire could collapse After the first phase of six weeks on March 1.
Israel has prevented the aid from entering the territory to Hamas’ pressure to accept a new American proposal for a temporary expansion of the truce, during which more hostages detained in Gaza would be released in exchange for Palestinian prisoners.
Hamas insisted that the second phase should start as agreed, leading to the end of the war and a complete withdrawal of Israeli troops.
Almost every 2.3 million people in Gaza have had to leave their homes since the start of hostilities. Israel began its military operations after Hamas’ attack in October 2023, which killed around 1,200 people and saw 251 more hostages.
Gaza has undergone great destruction with a huge humanitarian impact. According to the Hamas Ministry of Health, more than 48,000 Palestinians were killed during Israeli military action, and numerous infrastructure through the band have been levelded by air strikes.
