Ruben Amorim admitted they may be “the worst team in Manchester United’s history” following this afternoon’s 3-1 defeat at home to Brighton.

United were second behind the Seagulls and remain rooted in 13th place in the Premier League after a sixth defeat in nine league matches.

Yankuba Minteh put Brighton ahead and, although Bruno Fernandes equalized from the penalty spot, Kauro Mitoma and Georginio Rutter added second-half goals for Fabian Hurzeler’s side.

Afterward, Amorim attempted to describe the scale of the task ahead, with United now closer to the relegation zone than the top four points.

He said: “Imagine that for a Manchester United fan, imagine that for me.

“You get a new coach who loses more than the last coach. Imagine that. We must survive this moment. I know that.

“We are perhaps the worst team in the history of Manchester United. I know you want to make headlines, but I say this because we need to recognize this and change this. So there you have it, your title.

It’s hard to explain – Amorim

United have taken just 11 points from Amorim’s 11 matches since taking over from Erik ten Hag in November.

The Portuguese added: “It’s difficult to explain, we have to recognize the moment and not get around the problem.

“Everyone here underperforms, no matter the circumstances. It is unacceptable to lose so many games for any Premier League club, let alone Manchester United. It’s a really difficult time but we have to keep going.

“The opponents are better than us in many details. That we cannot be consistent. That I’m not helping my players at the moment.

“It’s a difficult moment. We must recognize that we are in a very difficult situation. All the bad records, the home defeats, the Premier League defeats, we are really underperforming.

“The fans will suffer”

Amorim said he will stick to his preferred methods even if it means more suffering in the short term.

He told Sky Sports: “It’s clear. I’m not going to change my way of seeing the game, I’m clear on that.

“The players will suffer, the fans will suffer, I’m sorry. I have a way of doing things but we have to survive this moment. What we are going to do is very clear to everyone.
