Francis was admitted to the Gemelli Hospital in Rome in February for double pneumonia.

Pope Francis entered its fifth week of hospital treatment for double pneumonia and continues the work of its papacy while the signs of its recovery remain positive.

Francis remains in a stable state, “confirming the progress” that the 88 -year -old pontiff made last week, said the Vatican on Saturday.

The Pope, who was admitted to the Gemelli University Hospital in Rome on February 14, also reduces his use of mechanical ventilation at night to help his breathing, added a declaration.

This week’s doctors said that Francis was no longer in critical and fatal conditions, but continued to emphasize that his condition remained complex because of his age, his lack of mobility and the loss of part of a lung as a young man.

The first three weeks of his hospitalization were marked by roller coaster mountains, including respiratory crises, slight renal failure and a serious cough.

But Francis continued his work. He approved a three -year implementation and evaluation process for a reform project which aims to make the Roman Catholic Church more welcoming and reactive. The Vatican office for the Synod of Bishops published a calendar until 2028 to implement the reforms and said that Francis approved the calendar last week.

This week, the Pope also participated in spiritual Lent Hospital exercises, which, according to the Vatican officials, involved a lighter workload. He received a cake and hundreds of messages wishing him the 12th anniversary of his papacy on Thursday.

The only public sign of the Pope’s life since his hospitalization was a recorded audio message thanking people for their prayers for his recovery, which he made in a weak and laborious voice. It was played on Saint-Pierre square for the faithful gathered for a night recitation of the rosary.

During the last four Sundays, the traditional blessing that the Pope generally offers a window overlooking St Peter Square has been published as a text.
