An American citizen of Russian origin already imprisoned in Russia for corruption has been sentenced to a second 15-year prison term for espionage, Russian news agencies reported Tuesday.
A Moscow court brought charges of espionage against Gene Spector in August 2023, although details of the case have not been made public.
Spector, whose Russian name is Yevgeny Mironovich, local news agencies reported, was born in 1972 in Leningrad.
A former executive at a medical equipment company in Russia, Spector had already been sentenced to 3 and a half years in prison in September 2022 for allowing bribes to an aide to former Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich.
The aide, Anastasia Alekseyeva, was sentenced to 12 years in prison in April for accepting bribes in the form of two expensive vacation trips abroad.
Dvorkovich was deputy prime minister under Dmitry Medvedev from 2012 to 2018. He currently heads the international chess federation FIDE.
Russia has arrested and convicted a number of US nationals and citizens in recent years. Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich was convicted of espionage in July and released in August in prisoner exchange with former U.S. Marine Paul Whelan.
