Edelman has been conducting its annual trust survey for a quarter of a century, and the global communications company says this year’s results are particularly alarming.
THE Edelman Trust Barometer 2025 released Sunday found that there is an unprecedented lack of trust in institutional leaders, with a record 70% of respondents saying they believe government officials, business leaders and journalists are deliberately misleading them.

The survey, of 33,000 people in 28 countries, also reveals that fear of being discriminated against is at an unprecedented level. In the United States alone, 50% of the white population expresses feelings of discrimination, while more than 60% feel wronged. by inflationthe risk of job loss and downward social mobility.
The results also indicate an unprecedented decline in employer confidence across the world.

“Among the very aggrieved, their experience is: you have high inflation, you have employment risk, globalization and [people are asking]“Is business really taking care of us?” said Richard Edelman, CEO of Edelman.

Another trend revealed by the results is the lack of hope for the next generation. Confidence in a better future is just 36%, with low levels across all Western democracies, including France (9%), the UK (17%) and the US (30%).
People are also increasingly viewing violence as a solution to their grievances, with 4 in 10 respondents and 53% of people aged 18-34 saying they approve of violence, property damage or misinformation as tools for change.

At the same time, 67% of respondents say they believe the rich take more than their fair share, three-quarters say they have financial problems due to inflation, and respondents increasingly believe capitalism as a failure due to their economic situation, with 55% of those surveyed. “I’m amazed that half of the people in our study now wonder if capitalism works — it’s a bad thing,” Edelman said, suggesting the reason could be because capitalism has worked for some and not so well. for others, or perhaps because of the way capitalism works. it was positioned by certain politicians.
