Aston Villa host West Ham United for the second time in January, with rivals Claret and Blue battling it out in the Premier League on Sunday.

The teams locked horns in the FA Cup third round in what was Graham Potter’s first game in charge of West Ham, but the former Chelsea manager fell short on his debut at Villa Park so as the Irons fell to a 2-1 defeat. They will look for revenge this weekend.

West Ham will need to be at their best to escape the Midlands unbeaten, meaning significant improvements are needed from last weekend’s limp loss to Crystal Palace. Injuries in the forward line have made for an unwanted challenge at the start of Potter’s reign and he will be hoping for winter reinforcements.

Despite their unusually lethargic defeat against Monaco in the Champions League in the middle of the week, Villa started the new year in impressive form. They won their first three games of 2025 before producing a two-goal comeback at Arsenal last weekend to salvage a valuable point.

Amadou Onana is a doubt to feature this weekend after suffering a hamstring injury last weekend During the draw with the arsenal. The midfielder lasted just 37 minutes before being substituted and may subsequently be unavailable for the visit of West Ham.

Ross midfielder Ross Barkley is out for Villa, but John McGinn is closing in on a return following a hamstring injury. The Scotland international could still be missed this weekend.

Pau Torres is still in the treatment room and Diego Carlos’ departure means Ezri Konsa and Tyrone Mings will be asked to line up at centre-back again.

Aston Villa Lineup vs West Ham (4-2-3-1): Martinez; Cash, Konsa, Mings, Digne; Kamara, Tielemans; Bailey, Rogers, Ramsey; Watkins.

Konstantinos mavropanos

West Ham are short on attacking options at present but could welcome captain Jarrod Bowen back into the squad after Graham Potter revealed he has been reinstated in training. Crysencio Summerville is also nearing a return, although Sunday’s clash will come too soon, but Michail Antonio and Niclas Fullkrug are out.

Potter also needs to readjust his backline due to the suspension of Konstantinos Mavropanos, but it is unlikely that I will be able to call on Jean-Clair Tdibo.

West Ham line-up against Aston Villa (3-4-2-1): Fabianski; Wan-Bissaka, Kilman, Cresswell; Coufal, Alvarez, Rodriguez, Emerson; Paqueta, Soucek; Kudus.

West Ham were extremely disappointing in last weekend’s defeat to Palace, averaging an XG of just 0.28 at the London Stadium. Not only did they fail to create chances, but the Hammers struggled to contain
Palace’s speed and power on the counter-attack.

Villa are set to cause them similar problems on Sunday with their tricky band of forwards and even the energy exerted in midweek should not stop Unai Emery’s side securing a third win against the Irons this term.

Prediction: Aston Villa 2-0 West Ham
