Bessent made these remarks during an appearance on “Meet the Press” of NBC, saying that “a week does not make the market”, when asked if the Americans whose retirement is invested in the markets should be concerned.
“We have these major government deficits, 6.7% of GDP,” said Bessent. “We have never seen this when we are not in wartime, not in recession. We make them fall responsible. We will have a transition. And we are not going to have a crisis.”
Bessent said stock market corrections are “healthy” and “normal”.

“What is not healthy is directly, that is to say the euphoric markets,” he said. “This is how you get a financial crisis.”
Bessent noted that if “someone had put the brakes in ’06 -’07”, it could have prevented the problems leading to the 2008 accident.
“So I’m not worried about the markets,” he said. “In the long term, if we set up a good tax policy, deregulation and energy security, the markets will be very good.”
