Borussia Dortmund manager Nuri Sahin says ‘anything can happen’ in the January transfer window but warned the club ‘won’t get carried away’ after reports linking them with a loan move for Marcus Rashford from Manchester United.

Rashford has spoken of his desire to leave Old Trafford for a new challenge after a miserable 18 months in which he struggled to achieve top form while making headlines for various off-field incidents.

It has been reported that the player’s entourage has embarked on a European tour which includes stops at AC Milan and Dortmund to discuss a possible transfer for Rashford.

Sahin cautious about his activity

Sahin, whose side are sixth in the Bundesliga ahead of their return to action after the winter break this Friday against defending champions Bayer Leverkusen, says any upcoming activity must be tailored to the club.

Asked about the window, he replied: “Anything can happen.” It’s not as easy in winter as it is in summer. We would be willing to do something, but we will only do it if it makes us better. We are not going to get carried away.

Rashford may be too expensive

A deal for Rashford would not come cheap, with United reportedly hoping a loan move would allow them to relinquish responsibility for the bulk of the striker’s £325,000-a-week salary.

This could prove a major obstacle for Dortmund, whose model is to sign younger players with potential and turn them into a fine item.

Dortmund finished the first half of the season out of form with just one win in five games in all competitions.

But Sahin believes the visit of Xabi Alonso’s men will bring out the best in his players.

“A victory would be extremely important for the ranking,” he added. “We are playing against a top opponent. So far we have always performed well against these teams. We want to get into the rhythm for the new year with a good game.

The hosts will be without Waldemar Anton and Almugera Kabar through illness, Niklas Sule through injury and Pascal Gross through suspension.
