Cliftonville lead tributes to former defender

Cliftonville say they are “devastated” by the sudden death of defender Michael Newberry.

The death of the 27-year-old was announced this morning by the Northern Irish club in a social media post.

It read: “Cliftonville FC is devastated to learn of the sudden death of Michael Newberry.

“Our condolences go out to Michael’s family and friends, as well as the many teammates he played with during his career, and to the fans who will be shaken and saddened by this heartbreaking news.”

Newberry, born in Newcastle, started out at his hometown club before joining Icelandic side Vikingur Olafsvik, then trying his luck in Northern Ireland with Linfield.

He won two Premiership titles before moving across Belfast to Cliftonville in the summer. Newberry played in the Boxing Day match against the Crusaders.

His former club Linfield also paid tribute with a message on X which read: “Linfield FC are devastated to learn of the sudden passing of our former player, Michael Newberry.

“Linfield have agreed with the NIFL that tonight’s Premiership match against Larne should be postponed.

“The thoughts and prayers of everyone at the club are with Michael’s family and friends at this very sad time.”

Linfield chairman Roy McGivern added: “Stunned to hear the news of Michael’s sudden passing.

“He was such a lovely, friendly guy and a very popular member of our team during his time at Linfield. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this very sad time.
