Tottenham Hotspur will still be without a number of first team players this Wednesday when they host Liverpool in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final.
Constant and devastating injuries have been the theme of Tottenham’s grueling campaign so far and Ange Postecoglou’s options remain extremely limited ahead of Liverpool’s visit. The defense has been badly decimated by fitness problems in recent months, but there are absentees throughout the team.
Spurs desperately need to end their 17-year trophy drought this season and Wednesday presents a prime opportunity to get one foot in the Carabao Cup final. However, they will have to overcome injuries and an excellent Liverpool team to make the showpiece event.
Here are the Tottenham players absent from Wednesday’s duel with Liverpool.
Tottenham will have just one member of their first-choice back five on Wednesday night, with Pedro Porro the last man standing at right-back. Elsewhere, Christian Romero, Micky van de Ven And Ben Davies are all absent in central defense, while Destiny Udogie is out for an extended period after recently suffering a hamstring injury.
To make matters worse, Spurs are currently without their main goalkeeper. Guglielmo Vicar has been missing since the end of November and his replacement Frasier Forster is also battling illness. Third choice Brandon Austin made his debut in the 2-1 defeat to Newcastle United at the weekend.
However, Spurs signed a new goalkeeper during the first week of the January transfer window, signing Slavia Prague youngster Antonin Kinsky. He is available and eligible to play against Liverpool.
Luckily for Postecoglou, Tottenham have no midfield injury concerns, but they will be without James Maddison And Pape Matar Sarr on Wednesday evening. Both are serving a one-match suspension after receiving two yellow cards in the previous rounds of the Carabao Cup.
Better news, Rodrigo Bentancur is back from Premier League suspension which saw him miss Saturday’s clash against the Magpies. He will likely be alongside Yves Bissouma in the center of the park, while teenager Lucas Bergvall could earn more minutes after starting this weekend.
Tottenham may want to bring in more attacking depth in January, but they have already seen some absentees. Richarlison recently resumed training. The Brazilian is yet to start in the Premier League this season due to ongoing fitness issues and he will be out on Wednesday without yet fully recovering from a hamstring problem.
Same injury sidelined summer signing Wilson Odobert since October and the former Burnley striker will be absent for the visit of Liverpool. However, young Mike Moore could feature in the team after missing since early November due to illness.
