Chris Wood was labeled as “ oustanding ” by his former manager Eddie Howe while the machine for Nottingham Forest is preparing to face Newcastle on Sunday afternoon.

Wood, 33, was signed by Howe to help maintain Newcastle in 2022, but only scored four first league goals in two seasons before being authorized to move to Forest.

However, he prospered in the East Midlands, already marking 18 times this season to help to propel the forest in third place.

Howe said, “I think he was exceptional. Chris, when he came to us, helped us in a situation really difficult to fight against relegation.

“We estimated that we needed a focal point in this position. Someone who could delete a lot of pressure from a team and give us a physical presence. I thought he had done all these things and was exceptional for the team.

“I probably underestimated how much he assigned our style and our game. Then with Alex [Isak] Back to fitness and Callum [Wilson] Back, he ended up moving on.

“I am delighted for him on a personal level because he is a great character, gave everything for us.”

Newcastle has lost three of its last four games, but are only three points of the top four in the weekend.

Howe wants to see a response from the disappointing defeat to Manchester City last weekend.

He said, “There is no certainty in football, which I can say without a doubt. But I think there is an understanding that we have not done.

“There is an understanding of what we did not do well enough. We have certainly covered this with the players and we expect a great answer. »»
