Former Everton captain Don Hutchison has hit back at Neal Maupay following the striker’s recent social media post in which he hit out at the Toffees.

Hutchison branded Maupay, on loan to Marseille from Everton, a “failure” after the striker targeted the Merseyside club on X following the 2-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

Maupay, known for his trolling activities and who previously posted a meme about Shawshank Redemption after leaving Goodison Park in the summer, wrote: “Every time I have a bad day I just check the Everton score and I smile. »

Although the 28-year-old is technically still with the Blues, Marseille have an obligation to make the deal permanent this summer, meaning he has played his final game for Everton.

Hutchison, who played for the Toffees in the Premier League between 1998 and 2000, replied: “Obviously Everton are living rent free in their heads.

“Everton fans take comfort in knowing that every night he thinks about the magnitude of his failure and that he couldn’t handle or cope playing for such a big club.”

Hutchison was not the only one to publicly criticize Maupay for his post.

Former boxer Tony Bellew, who supports Everton, responded on X with: “F***k! ”, while another Toffees fan, former Swansea City striker Lee Trundle, added: “You played for the club mate, have some respect. as a former player. Talk like that [you are] part of the problem. »

Maupay signed for Everton from Brighton in 2022 for an undisclosed fee. During his time at Goodison Park, he scored one top-flight goal in 29 appearances.

He has featured regularly under Roberto de Zerbi at Marseille this season, making 12 appearances in all competitions, scoring twice and registering four assists.

De Zerbi’s team are currently second in Ligue 1, ten points behind leaders PSG.
