Democrat Sens. Elena Parent and Sonya Halpern have reaffirmed their commitment to protect the rights of transgender persons, but have shaken up the party lines to vote for the Robertson bill, saying that they do not believe that taxpayers should be overwhelmed by the cost of transitional processing between sexes for detainees. The parents proposed an amendment to make an exception for prisoners who are already undergoing replacement hormone therapy, but this amendment has also failed.

“I will not let my party be trained in an argument that makes us appear out of contact with the very people we pretend to represent,” said Halpern.
