Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has urged Jack Grealish to work harder and regain his place in the starting XI.

The 29-year-old has played a crucial role in Manchester City’s treble-winning campaign in 2022-23, making 50 appearances in all competitions.

Grealish contributed five goals and 11 assists, helping the team win the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League titles.

Despite his previous successes, the England international has struggled to make an impact this season.

In Saturday’s 4-1 Premier League win over West Ham, Grealish was left on the bench, with Brazilian winger Savinho taking his place in the starting line-up.

The City boss has made it clear that he expects Grealish to prove his worth and fight for his place in the team.

“Savinho is in better shape and everything than Jack, and that’s why I played Savinho,” Guardiola explained.

“Do I want the Jack who won the triple?” Yeah, I want to, but I’m trying to be honest with myself about it. They have to fight. We can say that it is unfair.

“If you think that, then that’s good, but you have to prove [to me]’Okay, I’m going to fight with Savinho, to deserve to play in this position’, every day, every week and every month.

Grealish’s season has also been disrupted by injuries, which have limited his opportunities. He has only started six league matches so far.

Despite his recent struggles, Guardiola has expressed confidence in the player’s abilities.

“Two weeks ago he was injured and he needs rhythm and play, but players need to train,” Guardiola added.

“I have no doubt about the quality of Jack or any of these players. They wouldn’t be there [otherwise].

“I know he can do it because I’ve seen it. I have seen his level, and I want to, in every training session and in every match.

Manchester City will return to action in the FA Cup on January 11, hosting fourth-tier side Salford City.
