London Heathrow Airport closed its doors on Friday after a fire in a nearby electrical substation caused a power outage, airport officials said.

“Heathrow is experiencing a significant power outage through the airport due to a large fire in an almost proximity electricity. While the firefighters respond to the incident, we have no clarity at the moment when power can be reliably restored,” said a spokesperson for Heathrow.

“We expect a significant disruption in the coming days and passengers should in no case go to the airport until the airport will reopen,” said the spokesman.

The airport will remain closed up to at least 11:59 p.m. on Friday.

“We know that it will be disappointing for passengers and we want to reassure that we are working as hard as possible to resolve the situation,” said the spokesperson.

The closing of the most popular airport in Europe has disrupted more than 100 flights which were in the air and forced to divert or return to their original airports, according to the Flightradar24 flight tracking site.

Some 145,000 passengers could be affected by the closure, according to the aviation data company Cirium.

Heathrow airport estimated 1,300 takeoff and landing at airport per day, according to its website. Heathrow managed a record 83.9 million passengers Last year – an increase of almost 6% compared to 2023.

Airport managers said they are updating travelers “when more information on the resumption of operations is available.” Travelers can check Heathrow airport website or social media platforms, including X.
