However, they will have little time to celebrate their trip to the capital, with attention immediately focusing on some difficult meetings ahead. With one eye on Arsenal in pursuit, Liverpool cannot afford to become complacent ahead of the rest of January and beyond.

Liverpool’s next five matches may not be the toughest on paper, but they will certainly have the capacity to spring a few surprises. After the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final, Arsenal travel to the East Midlands. Facing the difficulties of Ruud van Nistelrooy Leicester Citythe Gunners will want to extend their six-game winning streak against the Foxes.

Arsenal have scored 11 times in their last two matches with West Ham United but in fact they lost their last home clash against the Irons last season. A defeat that proved crucial in the Premier League title race, Arsenal will aim to avoid a similar upset as they take on Liverpool in the fight for top spot this year.
