How Liverpool’s next five fixtures compare to Arsenal’s

Well, they got off to a late start, but Liverpool picked up their first Premier League win of 2025 against Brentford on Saturday afternoon.

Darwin Nunez’s stoppage-time double secured a well-deserved victory for the Reds, who had stumbled to league draws against Manchester United and Nottingham Forest earlier in the new year. The maximum points obtained during their trip to west London allowed them to avoid another mistake in the race for first place.

However, they will have little time to celebrate their trip to the capital, with attention immediately focusing on some difficult meetings ahead. With one eye on Arsenal in pursuit, Liverpool cannot afford to become complacent ahead of the rest of January and beyond.

Liverpool’s next five matches may not be the toughest on paper, but they will certainly have the capacity to spring a few surprises. The simplest of the group seems to be their home meetings with people in difficulty. Ipswich Townwho are next in the Premier League following a Champions League visit to Lille.

After their latest Champions League clash against PSV Eindhoven, Liverpool make the long journey to the south coast to face Bournemouth. The Reds have won their last two visits to the Vitality Stadium but suffered a frustrating defeat in March 2023 – Mohamed Salah missing the penalty in a 1-0 defeat the week after Liverpool beat Manchester United 7-0.

The rearranged Merseyside derby is scheduled for Wednesday February 12, with the previous match postponed due to adverse weather conditions. Evertonwho are once again under the management of David Moyes, still pose a stiff challenge to the Reds at Goodison Park, with nine of the last 12 such encounters ending in draws.

A home clash with Wolverhampton Wanderers should prove a relatively routine victory for Liverpool, but their subsequent journey to the reigning champions Manchester City looks much harder. The Cityzens are in incredibly patchy form but still retain plenty of star quality, with Liverpool having failed to win any of their last eight visits to the Etihad Stadium.

Between Arsenal’s last two matches in the Champions League phase, a trip to Wolves in the Premier League. The Gunners have won their last seven meetings with the Old Gold, including a 2-0 triumph at the Emirates Stadium on the opening day of the season.

Things get tougher for Arsenal the following weekend, however, as they also prepare for a duel with Man City. After drawing in dramatic circumstances at the Etihad in September – ten-man Arsenal conceding a goal in the 98th minute – the Gunners will be looking to secure a confidence-boosting victory against the misfiring Cityzens.

After the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final, Arsenal travel to the East Midlands. Facing the difficulties of Ruud van Nistelrooy Leicester Citythe Gunners will want to extend their six-game winning streak against the Foxes.

Arsenal have scored 11 times in their last two matches with West Ham United but in fact they lost their last home clash against the Irons last season. A defeat that proved crucial in the Premier League title race, Arsenal will aim to avoid a similar upset as they take on Liverpool in the fight for top spot this year.

The victory is even more significant against the Hammers given a high-flying trip Nottingham Forest follows. The Midlands side have been in exceptional form and have taken four points from meetings with Liverpool this season. They may have won 3-0 at the Emirates in November, but the Gunners will have a much tougher task at the City Ground.
