Heathrow airport, one of the most popular aviation clusters in the world, will remain closed for the whole day on Friday due to a large power outage caused by a large fire near the airport.
The closure was confirmed by airport officials, who noted that the fire came from an electrical substation providing power to Heathrow. “To maintain the safety of our passengers and colleagues, Heathrow will be closed until 23:59 on March 21,” said airport on X.
In response to the fire, the London firefighters reported that a transformer at the under station of Hayes, located in western London, had caught fire. About 70 firefighters and 10 firefighters were deployed to fight the fire, which was reported for the first time around 11:23 p.m. Local time on Thursday.
“The disturbances should increase as morning progresses, and we urge people to avoid the area as much as possible,” said assistant commissioner Pat Goulbourne, emphasizing the current emergency response efforts.
The authorities evacuated around 150 residents from neighboring regions and established a 200 -meter cord as a precaution. Firefighters also helped 29 people adjacent to security.
The cause of the fire remains under study. Heathrow airport advised passengers to avoid going to the airport and contacting their airlines for other updates.
