A 23-year-old man faces attempted murder charges in North Carolina after a horrific attack days before Christmas. Jami Raiziah Griffin has been in police custody since Friday December 27. Police say Griffin poured gasoline on a woman and set her on fire on Dec. 16. Ashanti Downeysuffered second and third degree burns on the right side of his body, by CBS17.

The incident occurred in Harnett County in Sanford, North Carolina near Barbecue Church Road. She was walking along the road to a Dollar General. Sheriff’s deputies initially believed that three unknown people from Ashanti, including Jami, had stopped a car they were traveling in, doused it in a flammable liquid and set it on fire with a cigarette.
However, investigators have since discovered that Ashanti and Jami Raiziah Griffin were living together at the time he carried out the attack. Furthermore, according to CBS17the cops no longer believe anyone other than Griffin is involved.
What happens next?
Ashanti Downey remains in critical but stable condition. Medical professionals reportedly treated her at Central Carolina Hospital before transferring her to a local burn center.
Meanwhile, Jami will remain locked up all weekend without bail. It is because of domestic violence element of his accusations and knowing Downey before the attack. The charges against the 23-year-old include attempted first-degree murder, felonious assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, and adult misdemeanor on a female. He will appear in Harnett County Court on Monday, December 30, according to CBS17.
At this time, police say there were no witnesses to the incident and it is unclear whether Ashanti is able to communicate verbally or physically.
