McDonald’s latest company to roll back ‘woke’ DEI policies as trend continues into 2025

McDonald’s announced Monday that it was ending some practices that are part of its broader mission of inclusion, becoming the latest major company to cut its workforce. diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) policies that critics consider “woke.”

The fast food giant is the first company to adjust its DEI policies in 2025. Last year, many companies made similar changes, including Walmart, Ford Motor Co.John Deere, Lowe’s and Toyota, after pressure from activists.

In an open letter to its franchisees, employees and suppliers, McDonald’s touted its achievements in its commitment to inclusion, one of its “core values,” and the company also said it wanted to “highlight some changes important in our approach.

The changes include McDonald’s dropping its “ambitious representation goals,” getting rid of its DEI commitment to its suppliers, changing the name of its diversity team to the Global Inclusion Team and ending external investigations.

Although McDonald’s has not mentioned any external investigation by name, the move means it joins a long list of companies that have pledged to end their participation in the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index. the man, which is an annual survey and report used to evaluate “policies, practices”. and relevant benefits for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) employees.

McDonald’s said she began discussing the changes months ago, acknowledging that she was studying the legal landscape after the Supreme Court’s 2024 ruling against affirmative action as well as similar moves by other companies.

Anti-woke activist and filmmaker Robby Starbuck, who has led a campaign denouncing big business’ woke policies, said on X after the announcement that he had warned McDonald’s three days ago that it would report on their “woke policies” if they didn’t. agree to change them.

Starbuck took credit for forcing changes to the companies mentioned above, as well as Tractor Supply, Harley-Davidson, Polaris, Indian Motorcycle, Coors, Stanley Black & Decker, Brown-Forman, Jack Daniel’s relativeDeWalt, Craftsman, Caterpillar, Boeing and Nissan tools.
