Mark Gurman at Bloomberg published a report about Meta’s next steps in hardware, citing sources familiar with the company’s work. According to these insiders, Meta is developing at least three new smart glasses models and has laid out a roadmap for releasing its first true augmented reality glasses. The company is also reportedly continuing its efforts to implement AI tools in a wearable bracelet and earphones.
Meta already sells smart glasses in partnership with Ray-Ban, a product line internally called Supernova. Gurman reports that this existing line will be introduced to new markets, although he did not specify where. Meta’s technologies can also be applied to frames from other brands belonging to its partner Luxottica Group. This would lead to the launch of glasses named Supernova 2, based on Oakley’s Sphaera glasses. This set would be aimed at cyclists and other athletes, and its camera would be placed in the center of the frames.
The third model is internally called Hypernova. This product would be a step closer to a true AR experience, giving users the ability to run simple software applications, display notifications, and view photos taken by the device. The more advanced feature set would have a more advanced price; sources told Gurman that this set is currently expected to cost $1,000. The initiates had already revealed Last month, Meta was working on bringing a screen to its Ray-Ban eyewear models.
Alongside these smart glasses, Meta has also developed an AR product called . Gurman reports that the Orion set will not receive a retail release. Instead, he said Meta plans to release a different iteration of the hardware as early as 2027. That product is codenamed Artemis, and sources told Gurman that these prototype glasses aren’t as heavy as Orion and are more advanced than their predecessor.
Another thing to note in Gurman’s report is that Meta is developing a bracelet that could control his smart glasses. Most of the company’s models have temple controls, but a wrist option would be similar to the one used for the Orion prototype.
Finally, he confirms that Meta is still working on prototype camera-enabled earbuds that could rival Apple’s AirPods. The information on this project in May 2024, and it appears that the concept has encountered some development challenges. If these “Camerabuds” hit the market, it probably won’t be for years.
