Meta is reportedly preparing to launch a pair of Oakley smart glasses later this year. According to a new Bloomberg ReportMeta plans to expand its line of AI-powered eyewear beyond its existing partnership with Ray-Ban. The report says the new glasses will be based on Oakley’s Sphaera model, designed for athletes like runners and cyclists, and would feature a camera positioned closer to the center of the frame for better capture.
A representative for Meta did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Oakley is part of Luxottica, which also has a portfolio of premium fashion eyewear brands including Ray-Ban, suggesting that Meta could further expand its smart eyewear offering to other brands in the future.
These efforts aim to strengthen Meta’s position in AIas well as in augmented and virtual reality, where the company has invested heavily for years despite lagging consumer adoption.
Like Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses collection, the Oakley version is expected to offer similar features, including AI tools and the ability to take photos and videos and interact via voice commands. However, this model will not include a screen, the report states.
At the same time, Meta is reportedly developing a more advanced pair of smart glasses, dubbed “Hypernova,” which will feature a built-in screen to display notifications from its smart assistant. This model, scheduled to launch later this year, could also include temple controls on the frame and could come with a strap allowing for additional controls.
The report also said Meta plans to launch new wearable devices, including watches and headphones with built-in cameras that scan the environment in real time.
Both products would be part of a broader initiative to integrate AI more deeply into consumer devices and better compete with the Apple Watch and AirPods. Bloomberg also reports that Apple has considered adding cameras to its own headphones.
