Maha Kumbh Mela, or Grand Pitcher Festival, is held every 12 years in the northern town of Prayagraj because Hindus believe that bathing in sacred rivers brings salvation from the cycle of birth and death and l absolution of sins. Uttar Pradesh state Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said 35 million people took part this week.
