Arsenal signing a new striker could be “the catalyst” for success, says former Gunners left-back Nigel Winterburn.

Mikel Arteta’s side have been runners-up behind Manchester City in the Premier League in each of the last two seasons and are currently second again, six points behind leaders Liverpool.

They have struggled to find a goalscorer since Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang left the club with winger Bukayo Saka their main goal threat last season.

Saka is injured and although Winterburn knows that recruiting a proven goalscorer is not easy, he believes it would make all the difference.

Talk to 101 Big Goals via William Hill Las Vegas Winterburn said: “It’s still the debate with Arsenal about a centre-forward.

“My personal belief is that if everyone was fit, an outright goalscorer would make Arsenal very, very dangerous.

“If you can guarantee 25 goals in the Premier League, that would be the catalyst. We didn’t win a trophy with this new team.

“With a new striker we would be very close and scare a lot more teams.”

The Gunners have scored 43 Premier League goals this season, seven fewer than Liverpool and one behind Chelsea and Manchester City.

Kai Havertz is their top scorer in the league with eight, and Aubameyang was the last man to score 20 in the league in 2019-20.

Winterburn said: “You could buy a striker and not win a title. We already had attackers but the team wasn’t strong enough.

“But now the team is strong when everyone is fit. The problem this season has been injuries and having to move players around and tinker with the system. “
