The Magpies are said to be in pole position to complete the signing of the AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomorialso, with a new face at centre-back needed in the January window. It is believed that the Englishman wants to return to Premier Leaguehaving previously been at Chelsea.

A gesture for the young Barcelonan Victor Roque has also been discussed, with the striker struggling to make a positive impression with the Catalan giants. It remains to be seen, however, whether Newcastle will be able to secure a transfer over the line.

Newcastle show new interest in ‘outstanding’ ace

According to a new statement from Football Insider, Newcastle now showing renewed interest in Burnley goalkeeper James Traffordhaving wanted to sign him during last summer’s transfer window.

The young Englishman has been considered to replace current Magpies stopper Martin Dubravaka, who is expected to leave this month, coming in and providing competition for Nick Pope in the process. Magpies chiefs are once again confident a deal is possible this month after the failed summer window.

England's James Trafford during the pre-match warm-up

Trafford appears to be a genuinely strong target for Newcastle at this stage, and it makes perfect sense to replace Dubravka with him, before potentially usurping Nick Pope as first choice between the sticks down the line.

He is a highly regarded goalkeeper who is already a very influential player, with Vincent Kompany congratulating him after a draw against Brighton last season, saying: “His season was no different than anyone else on the team.

“He has improved throughout the season, shown good signs. He has been more and more consistent and ultimately at this level consistency is the key word. We have more and more players performing at a consistent level In matches like today, without someone having an exceptional performance, you never get results.

At just 22 years old, Trafford still has so many years left to play at the highest level, so he is a fantastic option for Newcastle, and perhaps even England in the future.
