Ukraine says its air defenses have shot down 60 of 93 Russian drones as Moscow steps up its air attacks.
One person was killed and four others injured when Russian drones targeted the Ukrainian capital kyiv, military and civilian officials said, as Russia launched barrages across the country.
Ukraine’s air force said its air defenses had shot down 60 of 93 Russian drones launched into Ukraine since the early hours of Friday.
Moscow’s forces have intensifying air attacks across Ukraine in recent days, including a drone attack on New Year’s Day targeting central kyiv that killed two people.
During the latest barrage, a truck driver was killed by drone debris, according to Mykola Kalashnyk, acting governor of the Kyiv region.
He added that the debris also damaged several houses, injuring four people, including a 16-year-old boy.
The Ukrainian Air Force said another 26 drones were “lost,” referring to Ukraine’s use of electronic warfare to redirect Russian drones.
In all, Russian drones targeted nine regions of the country, including Kyiv, officials said.
Residential houses and commercial buildings were also damaged in the Donetsk region in the east and in the Chernihiv region in the north, the army added.
On Thursday, the Ukrainian military announced it had carried out a high-precision strike against a Russian command post in Maryino, in Russia’s Kursk region, where Ukrainian forces still hold territory after a major incursion in August.
The Russian military said air defense units shot down four Ukrainian missiles in the area, and the regional governor said the attacks damaged a high-rise apartment building and other buildings in a nearby village.
