Pope Francis’ The condition is not deadly, but he is not by danger, his medical team announced on Friday, while the 88 -year -old pontiff marked his first week in a hospital with pneumonia in addition to chronic bronchitis.

Francis’ doctors have delivered their first update in person on the state of the Pope, saying that he will remain hospitalized at least all next week. The Pope receives occasional oxygen supplements when he needs it and responds to the reinforced drug therapy he receives to combat pneumonia and a complex pulmonary infection, his doctors said on Friday.

The Gemelli Hospital, Dr. Sergio Alfieri and Francis’ personal doctor, Dr. Luigi Carbon gave the detailed update of Francis’s state.

Carbon said that Francis responded to drug therapy that was “reinforced” after the diagnosis of pneumonia earlier this week. He also fights a multi-plaster infection of bacteria and viruses in the respiratory tract. The doctors said that there was no evidence that the germs had entered his blood circulation, a condition known as the septicemia which, according to them, would be the greatest concern. Septicemia is a complication of an infection that can cause organ failure and death.

While his stay in hospital moves away, some of Francis’ cardinals began to answer the obvious question circulating: if Francis could resign if he becomes irreversibly ill and unable to continue. Francis said he would consider him, after Pope Benedict XVI “opened the door” to the popes taking his retirement, but has not shown any sign of resignation and in fact recently said that the work of the Pope is for life .

Friday, before the medical team update, the Vatican said that Francis had scored the point of a week in his stay in the hospital by getting up and leaving bed to have breakfast. Late Thursday, the Vatican reported a “slight improvement” in its overall clinical condition, its well working heart.
