This article contains spoilers for episode 8 of “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew”, “The Real Good Guys”.
The last episode of “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” season 1 (there’s no definitive word yet on whether season 2 will happen) closes this story. The pirates have reached Attin and Jod Na Nawood (Jude Law) is being able to meet the supervisor (voiced by Stephen Fry) in the main tower of Attin. With Fern (Ryan Kiera Armstrong) and her mother Fara (Kerry Condon) as hostages, Jod manages to bring down the barrier and grant access to At Attin to Vane and the other pirates, who round up the civilians to use as laborers. to charge. all their credits from the Republic.
Fortunately, each of the show’s young heroes brings their own unique talents and are able to work together to turn the tide against Jod. Thanks to his empathy in At Achrann, Neel (Robert Timothy Smith) knows about the turbolaser batteries on the school’s roof, which he uses to shoot at the pirate ships just in time for Onyx Cinder to escape and call for help. KB (Kyriana Kratter) and her ability to memorize information, coupled with her composure, are then able to pilot the ship beyond the barrier and deliver a message to Kh’ymm (Alia Shawkat). Meanwhile, Fern was able to use her powers of persuasion to convince her strong-headed mother to join the cause, and Wim (Ravi Cabot-Conyers) is able to overcome his idealism to become a hero.
Together, the children manage to stop Jod, but not without learning a lot along the way. In fact, after Jod introduces himself as a Jedi to the Overseer, a major revelation occurs that changes our understanding of At Attin and unveils a major connection to Sheev Palpatine.
Did Palpatine have plans for At Attin?
After Jod brandishes his lightsaber and declares himself both an emissary of the Republic and a Jedi Knight, the Overseer is immediately suspicious. That’s because, as he tells them, the last transmission he received from the Republic declared the Jedi traitors. Although this does not appear to be common knowledge to the people of Attin, the Overseer certainly knows it and it has been transmitted to the planet. This means that Sheev Palpatine, who was Supreme Chancellor turned Emperor at this time, was the one who declared the Jedi enemies and was allegedly responsible for sending this missive across the galaxy.
Since getting messages across At Attin’s barrier is no easy task, this implies that the Republic and Palpatine himself should have also known how to deliver these messages to the mythical planet. It makes sense to leave Attin a deep secret only to the most important elements of the Republic. But that also means Palpatine had even more secrets than we knew, which shouldn’t surprise anyone. His plans have always been complicated and contain secrets within secrets, extending to places people wouldn’t expect. After all, who could have guessed that the first step in his grand plan to wipe out the Jedi would involve taxing trade routes to outlying star systems and a blockade of his home planet? Perhaps he had other plans for At Attin if he had survived (or could have used them to fund other operations).
How Skeleton Crew Could Impact Future Star Wars Titles
Seeing “Skeleton Crew” weave into the events of the larger tapestry of the “Star Wars” universe was a much-needed tie-in for the series. While some felt this series had great strength in distancing itself from the rest of the galaxy, it really needed something more to feel grounded in the broader events of the rest of the franchise. There were mentions in Season 1 of how disconnected the kids are from galactic events, even going so far as to mention that they hadn’t even heard about the destruction of Alderaan and missed the news of a galactic civil war (not to mention the fall of the Old Republic). Seeing that little thread being pulled so obliquely and in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it fashion was exactly the right way to go. We didn’t actually need to do that see the connection, just a little bit of dialogue to help us conjure up images and tell stories in our heads about how this fits in and why this might work.
Still, the season 1 finale leaves us wondering: what will happen to the planet now that the barrier has fallen and Attin is exposed to the galaxy at large? Will other pirates come? Will At Attin join the New Republic? Will they finance the coming war against Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen) in “Ahsoka” season 2 or another future “Star Wars” title? As Master Yoda says: “The future is always in motion.”
