South Korea plane fire causes mass evacuation

An Airbus plane caught fire at an airport in the city of Busan in South Korea, forcing the evacuation of the 176 people on board, according to the fire authorities.

They say that four people were injured as they escaped the Air Busan plane on inflatable slides from Southeast Airport on Tuesday evening.

The fire would have started at the tail of the plane bound for Hong Kong shortly before takeoff. The firefighters – who arrived in a few minutes – were seen trying to turn off the fire which spread to the fuselage.

It comes less than a month after the worst air disaster on the South Korean soil when an accident on the Jeju plane hit the airport in the southwest of Muan, killing 179 people. Two people survived.

The fire on the Gimhae International Airport Air Busan International Airport started around 10:26 PM Local time (13:26 GMT) on Tuesday, the Yonhap news agency said, citing fire authorities South Korea.

He said the firefighters arrived at the scene eight minutes later.

Later, photos emerged showing the burning plane sprayed with water.

There were 169 passengers and seven crews aboard the plane.

The cause of the fire is the subject of an investigation.

Air Busan is a low -budget airline, whose parent company is Asiana Airlines.

Busan airport is located about 315 km (195 miles) south-east of the capital, Seoul.
