Man-United

It took Manchester United and Sir Alex Ferguson some time to familiarize himself with the Champions League.

National dominance between 1993 and 2001 was achieved quite easily, but in Europe the situation was different. Of course, no one will forget the stunning comeback to win the trophy in 1999 with two injury-time goals, but that was their only final between 1993 and 2007.

United won another Champions League trophy in 2008, before reaching the final in 2009 and 2011, losing to Barcelona and Pep Guardiola each time.

Since Fergie retired, the Red Devils have only qualified for Europe’s premier club competition seven times, failing to progress beyond the quarter-finals.

They are in fourth place in the standings for the most Champions League wins with 127.

robert-lewandowski-bayern-munich-champions-league-trophy

With six continental titles, Bayern Munich is the third best team in the history of the European Cup and Champions League. Since the creation of the Champions League in 1992, Bayern have won three titles, although the Bavarian club have lost three other finals.

The German side won the title in 2001, 2013 and 2020, but given their stature among Europe’s elite, the club perhaps should have won more, especially when Pep Guardiola took charge between 2013 and 2016.

Since their last title, Bayern have reached just one semi-final, losing to Real Madrid in 2023/24. Under the leadership of Vincent Kompany, they have a young, dynamic coach full of ambition. Could this lead to a seventh European triumph in 2025?

They rank second on the competition’s all-time wins list, with 177 victories since their first match in 1994.

It’s certainly no surprise to see Real Madrid top the overall tournament wins table, with 194 victories since the start of the 1995/96 season.

Winner of the Champions League in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2022 and 2024, Madrid is the undisputed king of the competition.

Add in six more European Cup triumphs and the 15 continental titles held by the club will be a record they will hold for the foreseeable future.

Their consistency is such that Madrid have failed to reach the last four on just two occasions since 2011, making them masters of the world’s finest club competition.

This season has been more difficult, with the club losing three games in a row for the first time in the Champions League group stage.

Carlo Ancelotti has won this tournament five times, but extending that record could prove to be his biggest challenge.
