Although there is no miracle solution for healthy aging, there are habits that can help you age well, especially with regard to what you eat.

In a 30 -year studyThe researchers found that a certain diet was associated with healthy aging, defined as reaching the age of 70 without any major chronic health problems, intact memory, strong mental health and the physical capacity to move freely and to mount the stairs. Of the more than 105,000 people studied, only one in ten was considered healthy agents – and they all had one thing in common: a diet rich in plants based on plants, low in highly processed foods, with a moderate intake of animal products.

In the study, published last month in the journal Nature MedicineThe researchers followed how the participants followed a multitude of healthy diets. While joining one of the diets, including Mediterranean and planetary health regimehas increased the chances of healthy aging, the alternative health of healthy food (AHEI) has been the most influential to improve the chances of people to maintain strong mental and physical health at 70 years old.

Those who joined the most strictly to the AHEI regime had a risk of 86% higher to live at 70 without major chronic conditions compared to those who adhered to food. People who were most faithful to the AHEI regime also had 2.24 times more likely to live in 75 years compared to those of the lowest quartile of the diet. This is particularly relevant because 80% of the elderly have more than one chronic condition, which increases the risk of early mortality.

“Our results suggest that food models rich in plants based on plants, with a moderate inclusion of healthy foods, can improve healthy aging and guide future food directives,” conclude researchers. “AHEI was also most strongly associated with the maintenance of intact physical function and mental health among individual health areas of health.”

What is the AHEI regime?

The AHEI regime, developed by Harvard scientistswas created to reduce the risk of chronic conditions and emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and legumes. The diet limits the supply of animal products and discourages highly processed and sweet foods, such as juice.

Previous research has shown the advantages of regimes based on plants rich in whole foods, such as fruits, vegetables and legumes. Residents of the blue areas of the world, where people live the longest, are celebrated to eat a regime at least transformed. THE “Three sistersOr Food Staples, from the blue area, from Nicoya, Costa Rica, for example, are squash, corn and beans.

The study used the data of the study on the health of nurses and the study of monitoring of health professionals to follow individuals aged 39 and 69 over a period of 30 years. It contributes to research on how the diet influences not only the duration of your life, but also the duration of optimal health.
