There are many post-apocalyptic films out there, but most of them share the same problem: by the end, you feel as desperately miserable as the characters on screen. Far too many directors think the key to this genre is simply to give us scene after scene of bleak despair, but what audiences really want is a film that uses a fictional future apocalypse as a lens to help us understand our current era. And if you’re ready for the kind of post-apocalyptic movie filled with both juicy philosophical questions and killer action sequences, then it’s time to stream Tom Cruise’s film. Oversight on Netflix.
The plot and casting of Oblivion
In the futuristic world of Oversightthe Earth is uninhabitable. We follow the misadventures of the last two people on the planet as they explore the post-apocalyptic wasteland while trying to stay one step ahead of violent and mysterious carrion. However, after a NASA astronaut crash-lands on the planet, it kicks off a crazy story of technology, clones, and identity that connects the past and future in a unique way. poignant and haunting.
Action legend Tom Cruise is the main star of Oversightbut he is joined by some pretty big names, including Morgan Freemanwhose gentle authority gives the film a sense of grounded vulnerability. The film also stars Olga Kurylenko (best known to action fans for her role in James Bond movie Quantum of comfort) and Golden Globe-winning actress Melissa Leo. Finally, in the casting, we find the talented Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, still best known for his breathtaking performance in Game of Thrones.
Audiences and critics are mixed
At the box office, Oversight earned a respectable $287.9 million on a budget of $120 million. Those aren’t exactly Marvel’s numbers, but the film’s profits are a reminder that there’s still money to be made through intelligent, cerebral pursuits. science fiction thrillers. Unfortunately, the modest box office success didn’t exactly translate into critical success.
On Rotten Tomatoes, Oversight has a critical rating of 53 percent. In general, critics felt that the story was relatively weak but was anchored by great production value and a stellar performance by Cruise. The film also has a Popcornmeter rating of 61 percent, meaning it has (barely) moved into “fresh” territory with audiences, if not critics.
Oblivion is worth your time
The movie obviously didn’t convince the majority of critics, so why should you stream it Oversight Today? On the one hand, the story feels truly original, helping the film stand out effortlessly among very crowded genres. Make no mistake, this is the movie you suggest to your friends who think there are no new sci-fi or post-apocalyptic stories to tell.
In addition, Oversight is one of those films that will give you food for thought long after you’ve turned off the TV and gone to bed. On the scale of science fiction, it’s much more Star Trek than Star Wars when it comes to delivering an intelligent and introspective story. This certainly makes it a terrible “turn your brain off” movie, but it’s great to watch if you want to think about something even as you process one action sequence after another.
Speaking of which, this film’s clever storytelling doesn’t stop it from delivering killer action scenes, some of which even showcase Cruise’s incredible performance. Mission: Impossible stunts to shame. These scenes are also well spaced. Every time you think you’re in danger of tuning out, you’ll benefit from some high-octane action to help keep your attention. And because of the aforementioned high production value, these scenes, like the rest of the film, are breathtakingly beautiful.
Will you find Oversight as revolutionary as I am, or will you want to turn it off and go watch Star Wars instead? You won’t know until you stream it on Netflix for yourself. Afterward, you may never look at anything, from the moon to the man in the mirror, the same way again.
