Hideki Matsuyama and Collin Morikawa are set for a Sunday showdown at The Sentry with just one shot separating the two after both carded 11-under 62s in the third round.
Former Masters champion Matsuyama leads with 27 under par at Kapalua – a 54-hole record in this event – with two-time major champion Morikawa with 26 under par in the first PGA Tour tournament of 2025.
Matsuyama holed an eagle putt at 18 to tie the course record but had to settle for a birdie, one of 11 Japanese recorded as he set a career-best in a flawless day in Hawaii and maintained his lead in the second round.
American Morikawa also closed with a birdie, his ninth of the round, to coast a 25-foot eagle at the par-five fifth that temporarily took the lead.
“Collin played well and I kind of kept up with him, so have a good day,” Matsuyama said. “It was a lot of fun but I wish it would calm down tomorrow.”
Morikawa said of his performance in the final round: “You look at the greats, they did it. You look at Tiger [Woods]he did this every week.
“I think if I asked myself, ‘Have I done this for the last six years, every time?’ Probably not.]
“But it’s tough. What I’m starting this year by saying is, ‘I’ve got four days, let’s see what I can do.'”
Belgian Thomas Detry is five shots behind Matsuyama in third position at 22 under par after a Saturday at eight under/#
South Korean Sungjae Im is one shot further back on 21 under after matching Matsuyama and Morikawa’s 11-under 62, while England’s Harry Hall is fifth on 20 under after a third-round 66.
