As promised on the campaign trail, President Donald Trump signed an executive order requiring federal employees to return to in-person work.

The order comes after Trump indicated he planned to retaliate against the former That of President Joe Biden a measure allowing federal workers to maintain a hybrid work regime until 2029.

“The heads of all departments and agencies of the Executive Branch of Government will, as soon as practicable, take all necessary steps to terminate remote work arrangements and require employees to return to work in person at their respective duty stations at full-time, provided that the heads of departments and agencies grant such waivers as they deem necessary,” the order states.

Agencies must begin transitioning to fully in-person work Friday at 5 p.m., the order states.

Elon Musk directs the Department of Government Effectiveness (DOGE) and is responsible for finding ways to reduce government spending and improve the effectiveness of federal initiatives.

One such initiative included ending remote work and viewing requiring federal workers to return to the office as a way to encourage voluntary layoffs.

“Requiring federal employees to come to the office five days a week would lead to a wave of voluntary attrition that we welcome: If federal employees are unwilling to show up, American taxpayers should not pay them for the COVID-era privilege of stay home,” Musk wrote in an op-ed published with Vivek Ramaswamy, former co-leader of DOGE, in The Wall Street Journal last month.

In addition to the return to work order, Trump too signed an order freezing the hiring of federal civilian employees, which will be applied across the entire executive branch.

The order stated: “As part of this freeze, no Federal civilian positions vacant as of noon on January 20, 2025 may be filled, and no new positions may be created, except as otherwise provided in this memorandum or other applicable law . “

The freeze excludes military personnel and positions related to immigration enforcement, national security and public safety.
