The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has signed an executive decree to prevent transgender athletes from participating in the sports of girls and women.
Under the ordinance signed Wednesday, the funding of the federal government will be refused to educational institutions which allow trans girls and women to participate in female sports and to use female changing rooms.
The order also orders government agencies to promote the sex sports categories based on sex in international organizations and to revoke representatives of large sports organizations and guiding bodies to promote “policies that are fair and safe, in the best interest of female athletes ”.
“We put each school to receive dollars from taxpayers in opinion: if you let the men take control of the women’s sports teams or invade your locker room, you will have surveyed for violations of the title IX and risk your federal funding,” said Trump , referring to a 1972 law which prohibits sexual discrimination in education.
Declaring the end of “the war on women’s sport”, Trump said that his administration would not “keep men and watches men beat and beat the female athletes”.
“We are just not going to let it happen, and it will end, and it ends at the moment and no one can do a fucking thing because when I speak, we are talking with authority.”
Trump also declared that he would push the International Olympic Committee, which left the question of the participation of Trans in Sport in international guiding bodies, to explicitly approve the participation based on sex before the 2028 summer Olympic Games in 2028 Los Angeles.
“We want them to change everything that has to do with the Olympic Games and to see with this absolutely ridiculous subject,” said the American president.
The participation of trans women in sport has been a lightning rod in American culture wars in recent years, although the number of athletes involved is low.
The president of the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA), Charlie Baker, told a panel of the American Senate in December that he knew less than 10 trans people who participated between the 520,000 athletes of the country’s colleges.
Opinion polls have suggested increasing public opposition to trans women who participate in the midst of very publicized controversies involving athletes, such as the university swimmer Lia Thomas, who won the national championship of division I of NCAA in 2022 before d ‘Be prohibited from female events by World Aquatics.
In a Gallup survey in 2023, 69% of Americans said that trans athletes should not be allowed to compete in sports teams who line up with their sex, an increase of seven points compared to 2021.
Baker, president of the NCAA, praised Trump’s order to establish a “clear national standard”.
“We firmly believe that clear, coherent and uniform eligibility standards would be used today’s student-athletes instead of a patchwork of conflicting laws and court decisions,” Baker said in a statement.
“The Council of Governors of the NCAA examines the decree and will take the necessary measures to align the NCAA policy in the coming days, subject to new administration directives,” he added.
“The association will continue to promote welcoming environments on campuses for all student-athletes.”
Athlete Ally, a defense group for LGBTQ defenders, said that he was saddened that young people are no longer able to know the joy of playing sports as their full and authentic self “.
“We know that this day would probably occur for a long time, because this administration continues to pursue simple solutions to complex problems, often causing animus to the most marginalized communities of our country,” the group said in a statement.
“Despite this decree, we will continue to choose love, acceptance and curiosity with anyone interested in creating a future of sports where everyone belongs. We will continue to work with sports bodies to expand access to the vital power of sports whenever possible. »»
Gladd, one of the largest LGBTQ rights organizations in the United States, condemned Trump’s order as “inaccurate and incoherent”.
“All women and girls, including transgender women and girls, should be welcome to play sports if they wish, make decisions about their own body, be hired for jobs for which they are qualified and be Expected by lawless attacks by extremists to the elected official, “the group said in a statement.
“Anti-LGBTQ politicians having a recording of mistreatment and silencing women and stripping their health care have no credibility in a conversation on the protection of women and girls.”
Trump has signed four decrees intended for trans people since its inauguration of January 20, including a proclamation to recognize only two sexes, the ban on trans persons to serve openly in the army and an order ending gender transitions for people under 19.
