Hollywood actor Michael Sheen has reimbursed 1 million sterling pounds for 900 people affected by the closure of the Tata Steel high furnace in Port Talbot, in the south of Wales, which left 2,800 workers unemployed five months ago.
The actor, known for his roles in Amadeus, Twilight, and a very royal scandal, among others, launched a debt acquisition initiative, personally investing £ 100,000 to buy and cancel debts instead of enjoying them. “I did not know how this bizarre system worked, but it seemed to be a good thing to do,” admitted Sheen, stressing that he had no money to “throw” but wanted the effort to be effective.
The idea took root after an emotional meeting with a coffee worker in Port Talbot, who spoke to Sheen of Steelworkers in tears after losing their jobs. “It really knocks at home,” he said. “I was just thinking – everything I can do to help.”
Remarkably, Sheen does not know the identity of those he helped, only their locations and the types of debts they have worn. “I never know who they are, I still don’t know who they are,” he shared. He added that because of the “stigma” on the discussion of money, some people may not realize that their debts have been paid and urged them to check their accounts.
His efforts are part of a new documentary Channel 4, the secret million million Million Pound by Michael Sheen, exposing how financial institutions benefit from vulnerable people. The debt market allows companies to buy unpaid loans at reduced prices, while borrowers remain responsible for the total amount. Sheen used this escape to erase debts rather than benefit from them.
A long -standing defender of social causes, Sheen declared himself an actor “for non -profit” in 2021, devoting his gains to significant initiatives. His last act of generosity strengthens his commitment to help communities in need.
