UEFA must speak to FIFA and IFAB to determine whether the rule that saw Julian Alvarez’s penalty against Real Madrid prohibited should be examined.

The incident caused a lot of debate and partially led to Atletico Madrid falling out from the Champions League in terms of penalties.

Argentinian striker Alvarez was tried for kicking the ball twice – essentially cutting him into his standing foot – which is in violation of law 14.1.

Referee Szymon Marciniak was informed of what had happened through the Var and the penalty was extinguished. Real Madrid won the 4-2 shooting to switch to a quarter-final with Arsenal.

UEFA publishes a clearer image of the Alvarez incident

UEFA published a statement this afternoon, which included a clearer video from Alvarez touching the ball twice. The declaration said: “Atlético de Madrid wondered with UEFA for the incident, which led to the kick of the penalty brand taken by Julián Alvarez at the end of the Champions League against Real Madrid.

“Although minimal, the player contacted the ball using his standing foot before kicking it. Under the current rule (law laws, law 14.1), the VAR had to call the arbitrator reporting that the objective should be refused.

“UEFA will come into discussion with FIFA and IFAB to determine whether the rule should be examined in cases where double contact is clearly involuntary.”

IFAB is the International Football Association Board – an organization that establishes the rules of the game and will finally have the finals will open whether this particular law must be modified.

The boss of Atletico Simeone is not impressed

Alvarez’s penalty dominated the post-match conversation and the boss of Atletico, Diego Simeone, was not convinced that it was the right call.

“I just saw the images, the referee says that Julián touches the ball with his support leg, but the ball does not move,” he said. “It’s questionable, whether it is an objective or not. But I am proud of my players, I am honestly happy, because we have contributed exemplary.

“When Julián kicks [the penalty]The ball does not even move a little. I imagine that they called the Var and saw that he touched it. I want to believe that they will have seen that he touched it. »»

Atleti won 1-0 in the night thanks to the goal of Conor Gallagher in the first minute, but could not find a second during an energy but low quality game.

Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois thought that the right decision was made concerning Alvarez’s kick and his teammates quickly asserted their referee on the Marciniak land.

“I felt that he had touched the ball twice and I said to the referee,” said the Belgian. “It’s not easy to see this.”

However, he was not impressed by Simeone questioning the integrity of the Var.

“For UEFA, it’s clear. I’m fed up with this victimity, always crying like that. The referees do not want to benefit from one team or another in Spain or Europe, for them, it was clear. With technology, in the Var room, they saw it clearly, they have a lot of cameras and many images. »»
