The United Nations peacekeeping force in Lebanon said that its outgoing assistant commander was injured after one of his convoys was “violently attacked”.
The interim strength of the United Nations in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said in a statement that the convoy took peace soldiers to Beirut airport when it was targeted and that one of its vehicles set fire.
The demonstrators blocked the airport road following a decision by the Lebanese government to ban two Iranian landing planes.
Lebanon president Joseph Aoun, and the country’s army condemned the attack on Unifil and said they would work to arrest the people involved.
Several videos shared online show a white United Nations white vehicle, as a group of young men, transporting yellow flags, continue and beat what seems to be peacekeepers as they try to flee.
Separate images show a group of men shouting as they strike, strike and climb on a convoy of three United Nations vehicles along a dark road.
The deputy commander wounded by Unifil, who was not appointed, returned to his house after having ended his mission, according to a United Nations statement.
“We are shocked by this scandalous attack against the peacekeepers who served to restore security and stability in southern Lebanon for a difficult period,” he added.
“The attacks on peace soldiers are blatant violations of international law and can constitute war crimes. We demand a complete and immediate investigation by the Lebanese authorities and that all the authors be brought to justice.”
Aoun said the attack was “unacceptable” and “cannot be repeated”.
In an article on the social media of the presidency, he added: “The security forces will not be indulgent with a party that tries to destabilize and undermine civil peace in the country.”
Supporters of the Lebanese armed group, Hezbollah, have gathered outside Beirut Airport since Thursday about a dead end between Lebanon and Iran which saw two Iranian planes prohibited from landing in the Lebanese capital.
He left dozens of Lebanese nationals blocked in Iran.
The measure was implemented after the Israeli Defense Forces (FDI) said that the Iranian QDS force had “exploited” international flights to “have” armed Hezbollah.

Unifil was created to monitor a buffer zone created near the border with Israel after the end of the 2006 Lebanon war, and has positions in southern Lebanon.
