Your guide on what the US elections of 2024 mean for Washington and Le Monde
President Donald Trump proposed that the United States takes control of Ukraine nuclear power plants during a telephone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The appeal between the two leaders came one day after Trump spoke to his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin as part of the US president’s push to end the war between Russia and Ukraine.
“President Trump also discussed the electrical supply of Ukraine and nuclear power Plants ”, according to a story of the appeal of the Secretary of State Marco Rubio and the National Security Advisor Mike Waltz.
“He said that the United States could be very useful for managing these factories with its expertise in electricity and public services,” added the summary, the American property offering “the best protection” for Ukrainian energy infrastructure.
We did not know which UkraineTrump’s energy assets have suggested that the United States should control. In recent days, Trump and his team have repeatedly noted the importance of Ukraine nuclear installations.
Questioned by the Financial Times which energy assets were mentioned during the call, Zelenskyy said on Wednesday evening that he and Trump had discussed only the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine, which is currently under the control of the Russian forces.
The question of whether control of the United States on the factory could be part of a peace plan was a “question of whether we are able to recover it and recover the operations,” added Zelenskyy. The Ukrainian President said that he was exploring with Washington if there could be an understanding that the United States could recover [the power plant]».
Aside from the Zaporizhzhia factory, the largest in Europe, Ukraine has three installations in the regions of the country still held by kyiv.
The appeal comes as the ambitions of reinstateing Trump’s peace showed signs of default, despite his repeated statements during last year’s presidential campaign that he would quickly end conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza.
A ceasefire agreement negotiated by the United States between Israel and Hamas collapsed earlier this week, while Trump failed to convince Putin to accept a full cease-fire in Ukraine.
During Wednesday’s call, Zelenskyy accepted an American proposal to stop strikes on Russian energy infrastructure.
The agreement occurs one day after the president of Russia accepted a 30 -day judgment for attacks on Ukrainian energy assets. However, Moscow continued to launch strikes on Ukraine on Wednesday morning, reaching the energy supply for one of its national railway lines.
In an article on Truth Social after the call on Wednesday, Trump described his discussion with Zelenskyy as “very good”, adding that peace talks were “very on the right track”.
The White House later said that the Agreement on Energy Infrastructure strikes was a prelude to new talks in Saudi Arabia “in the coming days” to prolong the ceasefire in the Black Sea.
He added that it was a stage “on the path of a full ceasefire”.
Zelenskyy described his call with Trump as a “very substantial and frank conversation”, but also called for a break on attacks to extend to “other civil infrastructure”.
The White House said Zelenskyy also asked the United States to provide Patriot missile systems, adding that Trump had agreed to work with him to find “what was available, especially in Europe”.
Zelenskyy and Trump also discussed an exchange of prisoners that took place on Wednesday, which was intended to strengthen Trump’s peace confidence. Russia and Ukraine have declared that it has exchanged 175 prisoners each in what was one of the greatest exchanges of the war.
“President Zelenskyy also thanked President Trump for continuing to push humanitarian concerns, including the exchange of prisoners of war,” said the American story.
