Zoox, Amazon’s autonomous driving unit, has published a voluntary recall for 258 vehicles due to problems with its autonomous driving system which could cause a hard -unexpected break.
The recall follows a preliminary investigation From the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) last May after the agency received two incident reports in which motorcyclists collided with the back of Zoox – Toyota Highlanders vehicles equipped with Zoox technology. The initial survey revealed that in both cases, zoox vehicles operated with their independent systems engaged.
Zoox recalls only vehicles equipped with software versions published before November 5, 2024. The company declared in an NHTSA report that it had approached the problem with a software update by November 7, 2024.
Techcrunch contacted to find out if the Zoox Toyota Highlanders were the only vehicles affected, or if the Zoox upgrade also went to its specially designed robotaxy.
Zoox is currently testing a limited number of its personalized robotaxy, built without steering wheel or pedals, in San Francisco and Las Vegas. Last June, Zoox shared plans to start testing its technology Austin and Miami.
The recall occurs after a few years of increased control of regulators after a Safety incident with cruise in 2023, which has since been closed and absorbed by his parent company General Motors.
Last year, Waymo published a Voluntary reminder of 672 Jaguar I-Pace Robotaxy following several reported security incidents, especially when you collided with a telephone post.
