After the drama of the Champions League’s return this week, it was now the turn of the Europa League to provide some midweek action.
16 matches were played on Thursday, with Besiktas winning 4-1 over Athletic Club in Wednesday night’s warm-up.
Both English clubs were in action, with Manchester United hosting Rangers and Tottenham traveling to Hoffenheim.
Ruben Amorim’s Red Devils scored a late winner to beat Rangers, while Ange Postecoglou’s Lilywhites almost blew a comfortable lead in Germany but managed to hold on to three big points.
Elsewhere, José Mourinho’s Fenerbahce faced Lyon, but failed to find a way past their French opponents, drawing 0-0 at home.
Portuguese side Porto hosted Olympiacos but fell short, losing 1-0 thanks to a goal from Ayoub El Kaabi in the 79th minute.

Roma traveled to AZ Alkmaar and, like so many others, were on the verge of a shock result. The Italians lost 1-0 thanks to former Tottenham player Troy Parrott scoring the only goal of the match.
Lazio faced Real Sociedad in a fiery affair. The hosts went on to win 3-1 and Sociedad had Aihen Munoz sent off in the first half, making the tie difficult to overturn from that point on.
And Ajax were on the verge of a shock result, losing 1-0 away to RFS.
That wasn’t the end of the action, with dozens more goals pouring into the stadium on a great night of European football.
