Samsung weighs relocating dryer production to US in response to Trump tariffs

South Korea Samsung Electronics and at least one other appliance maker is considering moving some operations from its Mexico plants to its U.S. plants.

“Previously, everything came from across the ocean, so if we had parts shortages, delays, material defects, we had to wait forever,” SEHA production manager Bobby Stevens said in a 2023 press release.

“But now we have local equipment, so within hours, even 10 minutes, we can get the parts and materials we need to keep everything going, which has had a big impact on production here,” he said. he declared.

The Newberry plant generated “nearly $500 million in capital investment for the region” and directly supports “more than 1,500 jobs for local residents through its ongoing operations,” Samsung said in the statement.

LG Electronics plans to move its Mexican refrigerator operations to its washing machine and dryer factory in Tennessee, Korea Economic Daily reports.

Samsung said it plans to monitor the situation and respond flexibly as it operates production bases in many regions around the world. LG Electronics said it plans to respond to market changes by adjusting the production system and production sites.

“If we build a factory in the United States, we will not only be able to avoid tariffs, but we will also have the ‘agility’ to provide products immediately when customers want them,” an anonymous industry source told the media. “If we produce in a U.S. factory, we can cut the lead time for local products by a quarter.”
