Professor Francis Nkrumah (89 years old)

Professor Francis Nkrumah (89), son of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, has died. Professor Nkrumah is said to have died on Sunday June 30, 2024.

He was the first born of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. He had it with Mrs. Fanny Miller, originally from Elmina in the central region.

Dr. Kwame Nkrumah is said to have met Miss Miller while he was teaching at the Catholic Church college in a town adjacent to Elmina called Amisano.

They enjoyed a relationship and Miss Miller conceived Professor Nkrumah before Dr Kwame Nkrumah left Ghana to study at Lincoln University in the UK.

By the time Dr Kwame Nkrumah returned, the child (Professor Francis Nkrumah) who had progressed to attend St. Augustine’s College had performed well in the O Levels.

In the meantime, Nkrumah had become the leader in government affairs by 1952 and was living with Francis at his residence in the new city of Accra. He eventually got Francis Nkrumah a Cocobod scholarship to travel to Germany to study medicine.

The late Professor Emeritus Francis Nkrumah, who was the longest serving director of the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR), has been commended for his role in the polio eradication initiatives in Africa and for the various roles he he served as a founding member of the Pediatric Institute. Ghana Association and West African College of Physicians.

In October 2016, the World Health Organization (WHO) Africa Region honored Professor Francis Kwesi Nkrumah for his distinguished and diligent role in polio eradication initiatives in Africa.

Professor Nkrumah received three awards for serving on the Africa Regional Certification Committee (ARCC), honored by the NHO Ghana office, and also as sole chairperson of the Regional Task Force on Immunization (TFI).

The cause of death was not immediately known.

But Indian author and publisher Vijay Prashad announced his death in an article on X on Sunday June 30, 2024.

The publisher of Inkani Books, publisher of the latest edition of the “Revolutionary Thoughts of Kwame Nkrumah”, cited a foreword to the edition written by Dr. Francis Nkrumah in which he praised his father, stating: “I currently feel that Africa continues to develop. miss [Kwame Nkrumah] unless we go back and revisit what Nkrumah really meant to Ghana and to Africa.
