Oscar nominee Carey Mulliganformer manager of the England football team Gareth Southgate and the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan are among the names recognized by King Charles III in its annual report List of New Year’s honors.
According to the United Kingdom Cabinet OfficeMore than 1,200 people from all backgrounds have been selected to receive an honor for their achievements and service to British society. The 2025 winners were announced on Tuesday December 31.
Mulligan, 39, was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), alongside Julie And Black doves actorsSarah Lancashirefor their services to the theater. “It’s an unexpected delight,” said Lancashire, 60, according to the Tutor. Mulligan, on the other hand, rose to fame thanks to her starring role in the 2009 film. An educationfor which she received a Best Actress nomination at the Academy Awards. She received two more nominations for Best Actress in 2021. Promising young woman and 2024 Maestro.
Southgate, Khan and actor Stephen Fry were all awarded the King’s Knighthood for their services to football, public service and mental health awareness respectively.
“When you’re recognized, you feel a little ‘gaudy,’ but I think the most moving thing is that when I think of my childhood, of my terrible misfortune, of my misery and my stupidity, and to everything that led to so much failure, a child,” Fry said. “And for my parents, really, what a disaster. I mean, every time the phone rang, they thought, “Oh, my God, what has Stephen done now?” It was kind of a joke in the family.
“I couldn’t have dreamed, when I grew up in a south London neighborhood, that I would one day be Mayor of London,” Khan said. “It is the honor of my life to serve the city I love and I will continue to build a fairer, safer, greener and more prosperous London that all the capital’s communities deserve.”
Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the awards celebrate the “unsung heroes” of British society.
“Every day, ordinary people go out and do extraordinary things for their communities,” Starmer said. “They represent the best of the UK and that core value of service that I place at the center of everything this government does. The New Year’s Honors celebrates more of these unsung heroes, and I thank them for their incredible contribution.
